Te Atatū Bike Parking Community Mural

A community art project integrating murals with bike parking. Key bike parks around the Te Atatū Peninsula community centre/town centre will be painted with murals to creatively activate the bike parks and clearly encourage people to ride and park their bikes.

The Project

The aim of this project is to engage the community, rangitahi and tamariki in the mural process and greater ongoing Te Atatū Walls Mural Project. We want to make the bike parks really visible and accessible to the increasing number of people who choose bicycling as a form of transportation around the Peninsula and further encourage and promote the use of biking as transportation.

With funding from the Auckland Climate Grant I was able to facilitate a workshop with Blair White from Rutherford College with 20 students from five local Te Atatū Schools.

The students brainstormed ideas around the te taiao and hauora (our local environment and wellbeing). They then came up with concept ideas and sketches for key bike parks around the Te Atatū Peninsula community centre. From there I scanned their drawings and pulled all their ideas together into two mural concepts.

The first mural was painted in November 2024 around the bike parking at the back of the Te Atatū Peninsula Community Centre. Students from Te Atatū Intermediate and Rutherford College helped me paint the mural. Overall it has been a great experience working alongside the students to make this project happen.
